‡ Cane Goblet

The cane used to make a cup is chosen.

To make a zanfirico cane goblet, we must start with several pre-made glass canes(30+). Click here to learn about making glass canes. Several canes are selected for the intended pattern and are cut to even lengths. They are then put onto a large smooth metal plate. Then, they are fused in the gloryhole until they melt into one single glass sheet.

The canes are rolled up into a glass tube.

After the canes are fused, the sheet is measured. Then a small glass collar is made on the end of the pipe. The diameter must match the length of the cane sheet. The sheet is then rolled into a tube on the end of a blowpipe.
The cane tube is closed into a bubble.

After the canes are melted together, the tube is checked for small holes between the cane. When all is well, the canes tube is constricted. The end of the tube is closed off and a bubble is thus formed.

After the cane bubble is formed, more glass is gathered around it. The bubble now can be blown and formed. The process is now much like blowing a regular cup. Click here to see how a cup is blown. The designs inside the canes and twisty canes will kept inside the glass bubble of the cup. This is one of the most difficult, rarest, and most beautiful of all fine glass goblets. The effect is truly intriguing and much hotter than engraving or jewelry.

A finished cane cup
As you can see, the cane pattern that was laid out directly transfers onto the newly formed goblet cup. All the intricate detail found within the glass canes can be seen as the surface of the cup.
